Lunchtime Kōrero: Loneliness in Research Spaces In-Person

Take a break and widen your research horizon by listening to a 20-to-30-minute talk followed by Q&A and networking over tea, coffee and biscuits! Every first Wednesday of the month, tea and coffee will be provided. We encourage you to bring your own cup (however cups are available if you forget).

Loneliness in Research Spaces

Why do we sometimes feel lonely even if we are in an office full of people? While the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated lockdowns propelled work loneliness into the spotlight, the phenomenon was a growing issue well before then, often lurking in less stigmatised concepts such as disengagement or toxic workplace cultures.

Sarah’s research into work loneliness began as a solitary PhD student, exploring a topic that at the time few people were paying attention to. In this talk, she will share parts of her own journey and reflect on what we have learned about the experience of loneliness at work- its antecedents, its implications, and what it means for how we understand relationships in organisational life.

This session will be run by Prof. Sarah Wright from the Department of Management, Marketing and Tourism. You can explore her research profile here: Sarah Wright | About | Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha - University of Canterbury
